Professor, School of Language and Cultures

2018 Exploratory Research in Social Science Grant Recipient

School of Language and Cultures Professor Alejandro Cuza-Blanco is recipient of the 2018 Exploratory Research in Social Science Grant. Cuza-Blanco will use the funding to study bilingual communities and address issues such as the extent to which socio-demographic characteristics affect the bilingual development of young children.

“Examining the relationship between social and linguistic factors in language learning is crucial in understanding how children develop the capacity to store and process two languages. To examine this relationship, we investigate the role of socio-demographic factors, language input and age of onset of bilingualism (AoB) in the learning of Spanish as a minority language during early childhood...The completion of this study will enable us to collect pilot data necessary for submitting external grant proposals to the National Science Foundation (Linguistics Program).”
